Thomas Tran received his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo in June 2004 and was the recipient of the Governor General's Gold Medal at the Convocation Ceremony. The Gold Medal is awarded once a year to honour the top PhD graduate from the University of Waterloo.
Thomas received his B.Sc. (4-Year Specialist), double major in Mathematics and Computer Science, from Brandon University in May 1999. He graduated with Greatest Distinction (GPA 4.0/4.0) and was awarded the Governor General's Silver Medal for his highest academic achievement. He started his graduate studies at the Cheriton School of Computer Science, University of Waterloo in September 1999, and was admitted directly into the PhD program in January 2000. During his graduate school years, he was the award holder of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada Postgraduate Scholarships (NSERC PGS A and B), the recipient of the University of Waterloo's Distinguished Teaching Assistantship Award, and was one of 13 PhD students worldwide selected to present doctoral research at the American Association for Artificial Intelligence Doctoral Consortium in 2002. He held a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Waterloo from 2003 to 2004.
Thomas joined the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), University of Ottawa in 2004 and is currently a Full Professor. He has taught courses in different areas of Computer Science, such as Computer Theory, Web Programming and Technologies, Electronic Commerce Technologies, and Numerical Analysis, etc. Thomas has supervised 27 graduate students (4 PhDs and 23 Masters) and published over 80 refereed scientific papers.
Thomas is a member of the Canadian Artificial Intelligence Association (CAIAC), the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE).
