For the second year in a row, a team of University of Ottawa and Université du Québec en Outaouais students won first place at Les Jeux de Génie du Québec in the small delegation category!
Les Jeux de Génie is a 4-day event in January, where over 500 engineering students from all over Quebec come together for intense competition and professional networking. Delegations compete in a huge variety of competitions. The first is the academic competitions, which test theoretical knowledge and practical application of different engineering disciplines, namely computer, civil, electrical, mechanical, chemical, industrial, and consulting engineering.
The other competitions include cultural competitions (trivia, debates, and improvisation competitions), and sports competitions (pool, indoor, and outdoor sports). This year saw the addition of an entrepreneurship category, where students come up with a solution to a given problem and pitch it to a panel of judges.
The main event and the biggest competition at the event is the machine competition. This year the task was to rescue figures trapped on a mountain after an avalanche. Teams had 4 months to build a robot to navigate the course and complete a number of tasks.
Each competition awarded points and our delegation won first place for the number of overall points! What’s more, they also took home the small delegation Participation Award and second place in the Outdoor Sports Competition, which was a game based on capture the flag.
We’re very proud of our delegation for kicking off the new year with a strong start!
