Fall 2018 was a busy, exciting and memorable semester. These are just some of the top moments and accomplishments from the Faculty of Engineering’s students, professors and staff.

September 11, 2018
Starting the semester off on a high note, two Faculty of Engineering researchers received the highest honour that can be given to a scholar, artist or scientist in Canada.
Professors Pierre Berini and Jianping Yao were elected as Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) for their outstanding achievements.

After just 14 months, we successfully launched a new generation of science and engineering research through the opening of the brand new STEM Complex.
Welcoming hundreds of members of the university community, the STEM Complex official opening was attended by The Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science and Sport, and Mayor Jim Watson, among others.

In an effort to help Canada attract and retain some of the world’s top new research talent, the Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI) launched the "I picture my research in Canada" campaign.
We were pleased to see Professor Benoît Lessard featured as one of the six researchers to share groundbreaking Canadian research.

Shortly after uOttawa approved the concentration in applied artificial intelligence (AI) within the existing Master of Computer Science program, which began in September 2018, the Vector Institute also approved the program, further supporting our claim as one of the leading postsecondary institutions in the field.

Sponsored by the Ontario Network of Women in Engineering (ONWiE), we hosted Go ENG Girl, welcoming over 100 girls in grades 7 to 10 to discover engineering.
The day’s activities ranged from exploring various labs around campus to hands-on workshops in all things engineering. Working towards increasing the number of practicing licensed female engineers, the University of Ottawa is proud to host this event every year.

October 20-21, 2018
The Faculty of Engineering was a proud organizing partner of the first-ever CANDEV Data Challenge. This 24-hour event featured 14 federal government partners and received close to 500 applicants.
The result? Endless innovative solutions, one-on-one employer-student networking, and five winning teams who will have the chance to present at the Government of Canada’s exclusive Data Conference in January.

Every year, the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering (CSChE) offers the Hatch Plant Design Competition for students enrolled in undergraduate chemical engineering programs at Canadian Universities.
This year, University of Ottawa Faculty of Engineering students claimed second place with their Design of an n-Butyl Acrylate Chemical Plant!

After leading numerous award-winning projects and making important contributions to the IBM Centre for Advanced Studies since 2008, Professor Guy-Vincent Jourdan took home the title of IBM Faculty Fellow of the Year.

During this event, we celebrated the academic excellence of our undergraduate students at the Horticulture Building at Lansdowne Park.
Over 450 attendees convened for this evening, in which recipients of the Admission Scholarship and students on the Dean’s Honour List were recognized and celebrated.

This year’s Giving Tuesday was an unprecedented success for the Faculty of Engineering, having raised over $65,000. With uOttawa’s matched amount, the total funds raised for our competitive design teams is $122,088!

After officially opening the STEM Complex, we simply could not do a semester without hosting a big, beautiful event in the new space.
In the first ever Fall edition of Design Day, over 350 participants in over 60 teams showcased their design projects throughout the first floor of the building.

The Engineering Outreach team at the University of Ottawa announced the addition of its third Maker Mobile vehicle. The Maker Mobile, a Makerspace on wheels, travels from school to school to deliver engineering and technologies workshops to youth in the Ottawa-Gatineau region.
Last year, the Maker Mobile delivered a record number of 1256 workshops, reaching over 30,000 people! We are thrilled to be able to further increase our impact and reach with this new vehicle.

Launched at the Celebrate Makers event, MakerLaunch is a complete growth program for makers, aiming to propel startups to success by surrounding them with the team, funding, facilities and tools needed to launch and scale.
This program will be a game changer for our students, alumni and the Ottawa entrepreneurial ecosystem.

In recognition of this year’s Alumni Awards of Excellence recipients, various members of the community (students, researchers, industry partners and alumni) came together to celebrate the successes of the region’s vibrant tech and maker community.
We were grateful to have all three recipients present to mix and mingle and join us in short interviews with Techopia LIVE.

Ending the semester on a positive note, we celebrated the academic excellence of our graduate students with over 80 attendees. Throughout the morning, we welcomed to the stage scholarship and award recipients as well as the winners of the 11th Graduate Research Poster Competition.
Among the distinguished students recognized during the event were the recipients of the prestigious 2018 Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships: Helene Katherine Schreiner and Diego de Souza.
