19.04.01 Presentation by Alain Malette and Vinay Chaudhry (MLEC) uOttawa India Recruitment Partner

Alain Malette and Vinay Chaudhry presented the status of higher education in India. There was discussion of the institutions from which uOttawa attracts students, how many students we attract, and how we can attract better students.

19.04.02 Approval of the Agenda

The agenda was approved.

Written reports were circulated from the Vice Deans of Research, Undergraduate Studies, Graduate Studies, International and Governance, as well as the Manager of Outreach and the Chief Administrative Officer.

19.04.03 Minutes of the last meeting (March 2019)

The minutes of the previous meeting had been approved electronically.

19.04.04 Business arising

The Dean discussed the results of Executive members rankings of the proposals for new faculty positions. He also discussed statistics regarding the number of students per professor.

19.04.05 Update from the Dean

Health and Safety update

The Dean outlined some recent health and safety incidents, including the following: An issue with ventilation from the laser cutter; a student mixing concrete sustaining an injury to a finger; a glass breaking in a fume hood; a student stepping on a nail; and a glycerine fumes released outside of a fume hood.

Overhead costs

The VP research will be revising the overhead costs policy taking into consideration practices at competing universities.

University strategic planning exercise

The Dean discussed the ongoing exercise.

19.04.06 New business

2019 Faculty of Engineering Frank Giacobbi Award

Faculty Executive selected Samer Sader to receive the 2019 Faculty of Engineering Frank Giacobbi Award.

FTPC Nominations

Faculty Executive nominated professors Tezel, Mohareb, and Kantarci to the FTPC.

19.04.07 Questions relating to written reports

Some professors from China will be coming for the program where we provide training in engineering education. There was discussion about this. The attendees are now expected to be funded by individual institutions, rather than the Chinese Scholarship Council.

There was discussion of aspects of the report of the Vice-Dean Research. In particular there was discussion of research collaborations and the countries of origin of graduate students. There was also discussion of Discovery Grant amounts for each of the U15 universities.

On May 2, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. there will be an event entitled “Meet the MakerLaunch Founding Partners & the 2019 MakerLaunch startups”.
The Kanata North office officially opened last week.

There was discussion about the trial of the IdeaScale tool. The Vice Dean Governance and Michel Racine will be following up with the Dean.

19.04.08 Matters to be considered in closed session

Faculty Executive upheld the recommended sanction in a fraud case.

The meeting ended at 3:18 p.m.
