Typically, only 5 or fewer such scholarships are awarded in Canada per year. The last time a uOttawa student won this scholarship was in 2011.
The Canadian Foundation Scholarship is intended to raise awareness about the educational programs supported by IEEE and increase participation in them. It covers a large portion of the tuition fees and related expenses for the winner’s final academic year. To be eligible, a student must have demonstrated previous commitment to the IEEE McNaughton Learning Resource Centre and other IEEE activities, and must wish to continue this involvement.
"Samira has been going above and beyond her expected duties with respect to the uOttawa Student Branch's McNaughton Centre. I'm proud that IEEE Canada has recognized her involvement and has decided to award her this well-deserved scholarship," says Shervin Shirmohammadi, professor and uOttawa IEEE Student Branch counselor.
Samira explains why she got involved with the organization: “At first, I started volunteering with the IEEE because I wanted to help others build their networks and grow professionally, but I soon realized that it was I who benefited the most from this experience. Working with IEEE has not only provided me with the right professional connections to help me move forward in my future career, but it has also surrounded me with incredible individuals who have continuously supported me throughout the past few years.”
The IEEE uOttawa Student Branch was established to provide services to improve students’ experience on campus by giving them access to up-to-date equipment, Internet, textbooks, and a quiet work environment.
