“To accomplish great things we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe”. - Anatole France
Indeed, outstanding accomplishments require big dreams and continued efforts. In recognition of the dedication of its most deserving graduate students, the Faculty of Engineering gathered on November 18, 2014 at Desmarais Hall to celebrate such excellence. About 80 students, staff and guests were in attendance at the breakfast event hosted by masters of ceremonies Dr. Michel Labrosse, Interim Vice-Dean of Graduate Studies, and Stéphane Drouin, Academic Administrator of Graduate Studies.
In his speech, Dean Claude Laguë welcomed all attendees and expressed special thanks to professors and friends for their unconditional support to our talented graduate students. Dr. Laguë also thanked the contributors, whose generosity helped fund the awards, bursaries, prizes, and scholarships.
“I would like to congratulate all of our award recipients. For us this ceremony is an occasion to celebrate your efforts and your success. We are extremely proud of your outstanding achievements and we wish you all the success possible as you complete your education and prepare to start what will surely be very productive and rewarding careers”, added the Dean.
Mr. Yves Tremblay, the morning keynote speaker, captivated the audience with a memorable speech. Mr. Tremblay recounted some of his big career changes which happened by being at the right place at the right time, and urged students not to give up when doors close. Sharing his entrepreneurial experience he cautioned against being too confident, and advised future entrepreneurs to try to understand their competitors’ mistakes to improve their own offer.
Recipient of the Faculty of Engineering Alumni Award of Excellence in 2007, Mr. Tremblay received a MASc in Electrical Engineering from uOttawa in 1982 after completing his bachelor in the same field from Université Laval. With more than 20 years of professional career, Tremblay acquired substantial knowledge in the field of fibre optics in which he has made significant contributions. His career path is filled with senior management positions such as Senior Vice President, Operations of JDS Fitel, and involvement with the Boards and Advisory Boards of some start-ups. Tremblay has also served on many boards, including the Board of Governors of La Cité Collégiale, the Ottawa Hospital, and the University of Ottawa. Among his entrepreneurial ventures, he co-founded Fitel-Photomatrix in 1988, which was acquired by JDS Fitel in 1998. Tremblay is currently active as an angel investor in more than 20 start-ups.
