Launching Entrepreneurs (LE-PEI)

To participate in this competition, students must have already launched a business based on a technological innovation, or must have the intention of doing so in the near future.

Up to $45,000 in prizes are up for grabs! The winners will also be offered one-on-one mentorship, incubation space, legal and accounting advice during this period.

Timeline for the competition

  • September 15, 2017: Submission and evaluation of updated business proposals, oral presentations and evaluation. Submissions to be made to Professor Hanan Anis (hanis@uOttawa.ca)
  • September 28, 2017: Final oral presentations and evaluation of the finalists’ business projects to receive monetary awards totaling $45,000

Competition eligibility requirements

To participate in this competition, students must have already launched a business based on a technological innovation, or must have the intention of doing so in the near future.

Business plan

The eligibility requirements are a high-quality business plan which must include the following:

  • Value proposition
  • Problem
  • Solution
  • Picture of the product prototype
  • Marketing plan (market size, competition, SWOT, 4Ps, etc…)
  • Evidence of customer engagement and their acceptance of the product or service (students must demonstrate that they have a paying customer or at least a soon to be paying customer through agreed trials, pre-orders, contracts etc.. )
  • List of funding needs
  • Financial plan
  • List of team members
  • Credible schedule of milestones for launching the business (the projections must be for 24 months)

Entries

  • In the case of individual entries, participants will need to have been registered students in any one of the undergraduate or graduate programs of studies under the responsibility of the Faculty of Engineering during at least one semester of the preceding academic year (i.e. Fall 2016 or Winter 2017 in the case of the 2017 competition)
  • In the case of team entries, a majority of the participants will need to have been registered students in any of the undergraduate or graduate programs of studies under the responsibility of the Faculty of Engineering during at least one semester of the preceding academic year (i.e. Fall 2016 or Winter 2017 in the case of the 2017 competition)

Outcome

One or two teams will be selected among the applicants and will be given up to $45,000. This money will be given in three instalments over a one-year period, based on agreed-upon milestones. Additionally, the winners will be offered one-on-one mentorship, incubation space, and legal and accounting advice during this period.
